Antique Early Otto Zwarg #400 3-0 Fly Reel

Up for sale is a very rare Vintage Otto Zwarg "SAGUENEY" Nickel Silver, size 3-0 #400 fly reel, 3 5/8" diameter, made in 1947, being Reel number 443 that year. Please note that on the reel seat is the engraved letter "B", which denotes that this reel was made in 1947. Please note further that engraved on the reel seat is the number 24, which denotes that this reel was number 24 made that year.

The name "SAGUENEY" was the name Otto Zwarg selected, which was named in honor of the celebrated river, The Sagueney. This reel is a very early production as on the oil cover is marked Brooklyn N.Y., meaning that this reel was made before he relocated his productions to St. Petersburg, Fla.

One read in history is that he made his reels to order for many years for sportsmen in all parts of the world. They were made with a twin toned sliding click....."the use of which was optional with the angler". The adjustable tension drag on the left side of the reel can be changed at will while playing the fish. Rolling bars protected the enamel on the lines.

This magnificent reel has NICKLE SILVER edges or rims. The reel is 3 5/8" in diameter, the spool width being 1 7/16" and weighs 12 ounces.

Listing Price: $3995.00

The reel was made in 1948 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The reel has a smooth alloy foot, NICKEL SILVER RIMS, 5 pillars, an ebonite S shaped crank handle (very much like the original Julius Vom Hofe reels) with a counter balance weight, and is a single action reel with RHW (Right Hand Wind). Please also note that the reel has a two tone (7 Red Dots) back sliding adjustable click drag on the rear. The adjustable tension drag on the left side of the reel can be changed at will while playing a fish. The rolling pillars or bars protect the line. The click drag is strong and loud, and would 'scream' when a fish is taking line.

There are some minor scratches and dings on the nickel silver edges on this 65 year old prized collectable reel. This is the very rare 2/0 size Otto Zwarg fly reel.

Historically wise, when Julius vom Hofe retired or expired, the company was turned over to his nephew, Edmond vom Hofe, who, when he retired, in turn sold the business to his chief tool and die maker, Otto Zwarg, who eventually moved the company under his own name to St. Petersburg, Florida.
